Unlocking the Power of the Brain: Awareness Programme on Learning and Memory

On 8th July 2025, our institution had the privilege of hosting an insightful Awareness Programme on the Learning Process and Memory, led by Dr. Malla Bhaskara Rao, former Professor and Head of the Department of Neurosurgery at NIMHANS.

Dr. Rao began the session by breaking down the complex anatomy and functions of the human brain into simple, relatable concepts. He explained how different regions of the brain contribute to learning, perception, and memory formation. Through engaging slides and interactive visuals, he demonstrated how individuals perceive and interpret images differently, making students aware of the unique ways the brain processes information.

A key highlight of his talk was the emphasis on memory enhancement techniques. Dr. Rao explained that developing a strong memory isn’t merely about repeated study but involves adopting healthy cognitive habits. He stressed the critical role of quality sleep—particularly eight hours of uninterrupted rest—in consolidating and strengthening memory, a factor often overlooked by students in their busy schedules.

He further provided practical tips for improving retention, including:

  • Structuring study sessions with breaks for better mental absorption.
  • Associating new information with visuals or stories to aid recall.
  • Maintaining a balanced routine that integrates proper diet, physical activity, and mindfulness practices.

The session concluded with an enthusiastic question-and-answer segment, where students—especially the Grade 10 cohort—asked thought-provoking queries about brain function, learning strategies, and exam preparation. Dr. Rao patiently addressed each question, making the session even more enriching.

The Management and Principal expressed their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Malla Bhaskara Rao for sharing his time, expertise, and valuable insights. The programme not only deepened students’ understanding of how their brains work but also motivated them to adopt healthier, smarter approaches to learning.
